fred herzog and me

i enjoyed a trip to the Glenbow Museum the other day, namely, Fred Herzog’s exhibit. he’s a street photographer from Vancouver who has wandered the streets of that city for 50 plus years, snapping photos of people, alleys and urban signage galore.  he’s an interesting guy, Fred. he loves taking photos and takes a great deal of pride in his work.

i was quite taken with what he had to say in the 20 minute film offered at the start of his exhibit. he had a number of things to say about photography that somehow fit my creative process as a writer:

  1. “real” body language
  2. shooting from the hip
  3. not asking permission

but what really stuck with me was when he said that, for him, creating art is a form of freedom. freedom to fuck around. that got me thinking about how a 48-year-old woman (me) writes sex, politics, and the male perspective. it fits.

thanks, Fred.
